4 Free Reference you can use as an artist

Any art piece you see or make doesn't come out of your mind; there is always an inspiration or a reference point; even when you are learning to sketch, you usually see something that is the base of that sketch or painting. In this blog, I will teach you how to find good Inspiration as a beginner artist; I will show you what I use to find references.

  • Your Friends

  • Art books

  • Newspapers

  • Random people on the streets

 Your Friends

Sketching your friends can be a fun process while sketching. You have to take one of your friends and tell them to be in a pose they can be comfortable with and sketch them while making fun of your friend's pose if you want, as your subject is live. You can take a reasonable amount of time while sketching, and you will learn a good amount of anatomy.

Art Books

If you want to dig deep into the Anatomy sector of art and you are the book type, you can buy an art book and take that as a reference; the part of that is that you can copy and see a seasoned artist's work, which can elevate your sketching style.

You can even find Free or paid online versions as well, and I have a suggestion for the book, which is George B. Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy.

Newspapers

Newspapers are a cool way to get a reference if you want to make dynamic poses as there is a sports section in the newspapers; you also get amazing photographs of sports players showing in their stylish and mobile selves, so taking that as a reference, you can upgrade your sketches into dynamic poses as well.

They are super cheap, and you can buy any newspaper; you don't have to select and find a particular one or this is the best newspaper; you buy it and draw whatever you see on the newspaper.

Random people on the Streets

Sketching Random people on the streets is one of the quickest and most challenging ways to practice sketching and take anyone as a reference. Because everything is quick and everyone moves so, you have to sketch fast, which opens your hand and improves your hand and wrist mobility.

It is also suitable for having a good conversation with people as they sometimes see you sketching. You can go to a station or a cafe to start your practice.

BONUS

Different Anatomy Websites

Different anatomy websites are cool and remote ways of practicing. If you don't want to go outside and want to sip your homemade coffee and chill, you get a lot of options to sketch, and that can be a fantastic way to upgrade as an artist.

There are more apps that have an animated 3D model, which you can pose however you want to add things and sketch; that is also a new and better way to practice, and you can take that thing as a reference.

You can also take Instagram models as a reference, as they have good modeling stature and pictures with different clothes, hence practicing how clothes are sketched. Taking Pinterest is also good as they have good photos that show anatomy well.

These are the different types of references you can consider. If you want to know more about sketching, subscribe to my blog and my YouTube channel, Pushkar the Artist.
